“Adulting” isn’t easy, which is why so many people try to delay it as long as possible. Even though your friends may be fine with sleeping in the same bedroom as when they were a child, you want something more. You probably want to get out on your own and live independently.

You may be looking to start your career in a new city where opportunities are plentiful. Your high school and college friends may have gone their separate ways and you want to meet new people. Maybe you’re just tired of your mom’s meatloaf. Whatever the reason, moving into your own place is one of the biggest steps you can take on the road to self-improvement as a young person.

Before you load the last box into your car and set out on a new life as an adult, there’s a lot you need to do. Millennials are in a unique place as a generation financially and socially. It’s important to know what you’re getting into before you move, or else you could end up back where you started. For example, you’ll need to have your money situation well in hand. That means knowing your credit score, scraping together a down payment and creating a budget.

Moving away from your parents also means you’ll be among new people in a new living situation. Finding a roommate who won’t be a nightmare is crucial for your sanity. Be sure you vet prospective roommates thoroughly. Don’t just look for similar interests — find out how he or she prefers to live and think seriously about whether or not you can co-exist. If your roommate is lazy or untrustworthy, you could end up “adulting” more than you wanted.
