There are tons of great movies out there. Unfortunately, some of them are just so long that it’s hard to find time to watch them in their entirety. But now that you might be stuck at home for a while, it’s a great time to check out these incredibly good movies that top out the 2-hour mark.
Avatar – 2009 (2h 42m)
Set in a futuristic world, Avatar is part sci-fi, action, and romance all thrown together with the gorgeous special effects you’d expect from a James Cameron film.
The feature is just under 3 hours long and it’s worth every minute, even if you’re not a fan of these types of films, you’ll easily find yourself immersed in the entire experience. You might even find yourself dreaming of being in the beautiful alien landscape for days after watching it.
JFK – 1991 (3h 26m)
If you didn’t believe in conspiracies around the assassination of JFK, you might after you watch this masterpiece. Kevin Costner delivers an incredible performance with a story told mostly through dialogue.
While most of the film is based on mostly debunked conspiracy theories, it’s still a riveting lengthy movie that will have you glued to the couch for over 3 hours.
Schindler’s List – 1993 (3h 15m)
Another masterpiece, Schindler’s List is a movie based on a real historical figure who attempted to get rich from the German war effort and saved over a thousand Jewish people from death in doing so.
The movie presents its main character as much more of a humanitarian than he may have been in real life, but the brutal depiction of what happened to the Jewish people at the hands of Nazi’s during WWII is very accurate according to those who lived it. This movie is full of graphic violence.
The Green Mile – 1999 (3h 9m)
Like any film with Tom Hanks, The Green Mile is an excellent movie worth watching at least once in spite of it’s 3+ hour run time. Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, the movie debuted just 3 years after the novel.
I read the novel about a year before the movie came out and was happy to find that the film stuck to the book very closely (which is a pet peeve of mine). Even key conversations between characters were echoed in the movie almost word for word.
Wolf of Wall Street – 2013 (3h 0m)
A raunchy story of a conman in the 80’s will have your jaw dropped more than once. Leonardo DiCaprio’s acting is exquisite and it’s almost impossible to imagine that he didn’t enjoy some of these scenes at least a little bit.
The film is definitely not for kids, but adults will appreciate the storytelling amidst DiCaprio’s debauchery. Who doesn’t wish they were so rich, they could get away with doing whatever they want?
